Chef Ivan Chan is a distinguished culinary professional based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, known for his expertise in authentic Chinese cuisine with a modern twist. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he developed a deep passion for Cantonese cooking at an early age, inspired by his grandmother’s kitchen. In 1993, he relocated to Halifax, where he continued to refine his skills and establish himself in the Canadian culinary scene.
In 2015, Chef Chan and his family founded The Orient Chinese Cuisine in Bedford, Nova Scotia. The restaurant quickly gained recognition for its dedication to traditional Chinese flavors, innovative fusion dishes, and a commitment to using locally sourced ingredients. His exceptional culinary artistry led to national recognition, making history in 2016 as the first Chinese cuisine-focused chef invited to the Canadian Culinary Championship. He went on to win a bronze medal in 2017 and a gold medal in 2020, further establishing his recognition in the Canadian competition scene and paving the way for future Chinese-focused chefs.
Beyond his restaurant, Chef Chan offers private catering services, curating bespoke dining experiences tailored to clients’ tastes. He is also an active voice in the culinary industry, hosting a podcast that features conversations with industry leaders and influencers.
